Sandia Mountains

Mountain TreesNew Mexico has some of the best mountain hiking in the southwest. The weather is excellent year-round and a majority of our trails are passable during the winter.

Mountain HikingIf you stay in Albuquerque, you are less than 20-30 minutes from the mountains. Because trails are easily accessible, it is extremely convenient for hikers to spend the afternoon in the forest. On your visit to New Mexico, you can enjoy clear and sunny skies nearly every day of the year.

There are several miles of trails that hikers can traverse in the Sandia Mountains. It is possible to travel across the mountain range from Tijeras to the Foothills in Albuquerque.

Make sure that you bring a cell phone, water bottle, snacks, and a camera while out on your hiking adventure. Did you know that the Sandia Mountains were once under water nearly 5 million years ago? You might find a shark tooth while hiking.
